China Unveils AI-Powered ‘Fengyuan’ Model to Revolutionize Weather Forecasting

The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) launched its groundbreaking 'Fengyuan' artificial intelligence weather forecasting system on December 19, 2025, marking a major leap in climate prediction capabilities. This open-source platform, unveiled in Xiongan New Area, combines physical modeling with AI analytics to improve extreme weather detection and cross-sector preparedness.

CMA Deputy Director Cao Xiaozhong emphasized the system's significance as China's first fully independent meteorological AI model with proprietary intellectual property. 'Fengyuan' aims to serve Belt and Road Initiative partners while supporting critical sectors including renewable energy management, aviation safety, and public health planning.

Three existing CMA forecasting models received simultaneous upgrades: 'Fengqing' now tracks 11 additional climate parameters, 'Fenglei' delivers precise rainfall predictions up to 6 hours in advance, and 'Fengshun' enhances seasonal forecasting resolution. These improvements will strengthen early warning systems for typhoons, heatwaves, and other climate emergencies across Asia.

Chief scientist Wang Yaqiang revealed plans to develop a unified forecasting framework integrating atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial data. The CMA continues collaborating with international partners to expand applications in agricultural planning and infrastructure resilience, particularly for developing economies.
