China Urges Ceasefire in Cambodia-Thailand Border Tensions

China has called for immediate de-escalation between Cambodia and Thailand amid renewed border clashes, emphasizing its commitment to regional stability. Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin stated on Thursday that Beijing is "deeply saddened by casualties" and urged both nations to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.

The appeal follows reports speculating about Chinese-made weapons being used in the conflict. Jiang clarified that defense cooperation with both countries strictly adheres to international norms and "is not targeted at any third party." He dismissed allegations of indirect involvement as "malicious hype," asserting China's neutral peacekeeping role.

As a key trading partner to both Southeast Asian nations, China has offered to mediate talks through established diplomatic channels. Analysts suggest Beijing's intervention reflects its growing responsibility in maintaining ASEAN security frameworks, particularly after recent economic integration milestones achieved this year through Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreements.

Jiang confirmed China will continue coordinating with ASEAN counterparts to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to conflict zones. The development comes as cross-border trade between Cambodia and Thailand has reportedly dropped 18% this quarter, according to preliminary data from regional chambers of commerce.
