China Launches 10-Year Earth System Forecasting Initiative

China has unveiled a landmark strategy to revolutionize environmental prediction capabilities, with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) announcing its Earth System Forecasting Development Strategy (2025–2035) on December 18, 2025. The initiative aims to establish a world-leading, self-reliant forecasting system by 2035, addressing climate resilience and disaster preparedness across Asia.

The plan prioritizes advanced modeling of atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial interactions, leveraging AI and satellite networks to improve typhoon tracking, drought prediction, and extreme weather alerts. Business analysts note the strategy could reshape agricultural planning and energy infrastructure investments in climate-vulnerable regions. Academic institutions in the Chinese mainland are already collaborating on cross-disciplinary climate research projects aligned with the initiative.
