China Condemns U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan, Warns of Red Lines

China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office issued a stern warning to the United States on Thursday, December 18, 2025, demanding an immediate halt to its $11 billion arms sales package to the Taiwan region. Spokesperson Chen Binhua emphasized that the move constitutes a direct violation of the one-China principle and undermines cross-strait stability.

Chen stated the Taiwan question remains at the core of China's national interests, calling U.S. actions 'a flagrant interference in internal affairs' that emboldens separatist forces. The arms deal follows recent efforts by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to seek foreign military support, which Beijing claims transforms Taiwan into a 'powder keg' endangering residents.

The spokesperson urged Washington to adhere to the three China-U.S. joint communiques and cease support for what he termed 'peace-breakers' advocating independence. Chen reaffirmed China's commitment to national reunification, warning that any attempts to cross 'red lines' would trigger decisive countermeasures.

Analysts suggest the escalation reflects growing tensions as the DPP authorities continue prioritizing military alignment with the U.S. over dialogue. The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of cross-strait relations ahead of key political events in 2026.
