China Imposes Sanctions on Ex-Japan Defense Chief Over Taiwan Ties

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced sanctions on December 15, 2025, against Shigeru Iwasaki, former chief of staff of Japan's Self-Defense Forces, citing his alleged collusion with 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces. The measures include freezing Iwasaki's assets within the Chinese mainland, banning transactions with Chinese entities, and prohibiting his entry into the country.

In a statement, the ministry emphasized that the sanctions aim to 'safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,' reiterating Beijing's opposition to external interference in cross-strait affairs. Analysts note the move underscores China's heightened sensitivity to foreign engagement with Taiwan, which it considers an inalienable part of its territory.

The decision comes amid ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with Beijing urging all parties to adhere to the One-China principle. Japan has yet to issue an official response to the sanctions as of press time.
