China has taken a major leap in smart transportation by granting its first road approval for Level-3 autonomous driving vehicles, signaling a new era for the automotive industry. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced on Monday that two electric sedan models—developed by Changan Automobile and BAIC Motor's Arcfox—are now permitted to operate on designated public roads under specific conditions.
Changan's vehicle, approved for use in Chongqing, can handle single-lane autonomous driving at speeds up to 50 km/h during traffic congestion on highways and urban expressways. Meanwhile, Arcfox's model, authorized in Beijing, supports speeds up to 80 km/h in similar environments. Both systems require human drivers to remain ready to take control when necessary.
Level-3 automation, classified as "conditionally automated driving," represents a critical milestone between partial and high automation. The approval follows a national work plan issued this September to accelerate production of advanced autonomous vehicles, underscoring China's push to lead in next-generation mobility solutions.
