Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng called for strengthened cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during a high-level meeting in Beijing this week, emphasizing China's role in fostering global economic stability. The meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on December 10 came as the IMF Shanghai Center officially commenced operations, marking a new phase in technical collaboration.
He, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted China's steady economic growth in 2025 despite global challenges. "China remains committed to providing sustained momentum for worldwide development through open international cooperation," he stated, reaffirming confidence in maintaining healthy economic expansion.
Georgieva acknowledged China's contributions to global financial governance, particularly through the newly operational Shanghai hub. The facility, launched on December 8, is expected to enhance capacity-building programs across Asia and facilitate policy dialogue under the IMF's mandate.
This development follows China's active participation in multilateral initiatives throughout 2025, including recent agreements on debt sustainability frameworks for developing economies. Analysts suggest the strengthened IMF partnership could accelerate digital currency research and climate finance mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region.
