Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to deepening strategic cooperation with Brunei during high-level talks in Beijing this week. Meeting with Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof on December 11, 2025, Wang emphasized maintaining political trust and expanding collaboration in manufacturing, agriculture, and fisheries.
"China stands ready to work with Brunei to create new highlights in our cooperation while resisting unilateral bullying and Cold War mentalities," stated Wang, who serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. The dialogue comes as both nations prepare to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.
Erywan echoed the sentiment, noting Brunei's interest in aligning development strategies with China and enhancing cultural exchanges. The Brunei official highlighted China's stabilizing role in Asia, particularly amid growing global uncertainties, stating: "Regional countries must unite against neocolonial practices threatening our collective prosperity."
With 2026 also marking the 5th anniversary of China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership, Wang proposed intensifying multilateral coordination through open regionalism. Both sides agreed to advance infrastructure connectivity projects under the Belt and Road Initiative while exploring green energy collaborations.
