Guangzhou's athletic stadium erupted in celebration as track and field competitions launched at China's 12th National Paralympic Games on Tuesday. The event commenced with vibrant Yingge dances and lion dance performances, symbolizing strength and resilience, before China Disabled Persons' Federation Chairman Cheng Kai declared the games open.
Local sprinter Jiang Yanhong made an immediate impact by winning gold in the women's 100m T64 final (14.99 seconds) during her Paralympic debut. Meanwhile, Liaoning athlete Zhang Qinghong delivered a record-breaking performance in the men's 100m T63 final, clocking 14.52 seconds despite a dramatic finish-line stumble.
"Four years of battling prosthetic challenges finally paid off," an emotional Zhang told reporters post-race. "We constantly fight gravity control and equipment discomfort – this victory makes every struggle worthwhile."
Over 1,300 athletes from 31 provincial teams are competing through December 15 in Guangdong Province, demonstrating extraordinary athleticism while promoting social inclusion through sport.
