U.S.-Thai Filmmakers Spotlight Cross-Cultural Ties at HIIFF 2025

American director Jinho Myung and Thai actor Legyaan Thapa brought their collaborative coming-of-age drama Softshell to the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival this week, offering insights into cross-cultural storytelling during an exclusive interview with CGTN.

"This tropical paradise defies expectations," Myung told reporters, describing his first impressions of Sanya. "The combination of warm climate, vibrant greenery, and artistic energy creates an ideal festival atmosphere." Thapa added that Hainan's natural beauty and welcoming environment foster meaningful connections among international filmmakers.

The duo highlighted China's evolving cinema landscape, with Myung noting: "Audiences here show equal enthusiasm for intimate indie productions and commercial spectacles – a rare balance that speaks to maturing film culture." Their film Softshell, which explores multicultural family dynamics, has drawn particular attention for its resonance with Asian diaspora communities.

Thapa emphasized the historical parallels between Thai and Chinese cultural values shown in the film, recalling: "Growing up near Bangkok's Chinatown, I witnessed firsthand how these traditions naturally intertwine. Our story reflects that shared heritage."

As HIIFF 2025 continues through December 14, industry observers note increasing collaboration between Asian creatives and Western filmmakers, with Hainan emerging as a strategic hub for cross-border cultural exchange.
