Hong Kong Cancels Japanese Films Amid Diplomatic Tensions Over Taiwan Remarks

Hong Kong has abruptly canceled screenings of three Japanese films scheduled for its 'Food for Thought – A Cinematic Feast' program this week, following controversial remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding the Taiwan region. The move highlights escalating sensitivities in cross-strait diplomacy as 2025 draws to a close.

The canceled films – Seasonal Flavors, Urban Harvest, and Kitchen Dialogues – were intended to showcase Japan's culinary culture through cinematic storytelling. Organizers cited 'unforeseen circumstances' without elaborating, though sources indicate the decision came hours after Takaichi's speech advocating 'closer strategic cooperation' with Taiwan authorities.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin reiterated Beijing's position this Wednesday: 'The Taiwan question concerns China's core interests. We urge relevant parties to strictly adhere to the one-China principle.' The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has not commented on whether this cancellation reflects broader policy changes.

Cultural analysts note this marks the first time Hong Kong's film programs have been affected by Japan-Taiwan political discourse since 2021. The incident coincides with renewed debates about cultural diplomacy's role in Asia's complex geopolitical landscape.
