China's Ministry of National Defense has denounced Japan's characterization of recent naval exercises involving the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation as provocative and misleading. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang stated on Sunday that the drills conducted east of the Miyako Strait represent routine training fully compliant with international law.
"Japan's recent escalation of military security provocations raises serious questions about its strategic intentions," Zhang warned, emphasizing that Tokyo must "rectify its errors" and abandon unlawful claims. The spokesperson cautioned against reviving militarism, stating such actions would lead to "an abyss from which there is no return."
The remarks follow increased regional scrutiny of military activities in East Asia this year. Analysts note the Liaoning's exercises reflect China's growing naval capabilities amid evolving security dynamics. Japan has not yet issued an official response to the statement.
