German composer Thies Mynther has become an unexpected cultural ambassador at the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF), where his short film Ploo is competing for the Golden Coconut Award. In an exclusive interview with CGTN's Zhang Meng, the first-time visitor to Sanya expressed admiration for what he called "the electric energy" of Chinese cinema enthusiasts.
"The audience here listens with their whole being," Mynther observed during his December 6 appearance. "Their questions about sound design showed a sophistication I've rarely encountered." The tropical festival setting proved equally inspiring, with the composer noting Hainan's unique blend of natural beauty and cultural ambition.
HIIFF 2025 continues through December 12, showcasing 189 films from 52 countries and regions. Industry analysts highlight the event's growing influence in bridging Asian and global cinematic traditions, particularly through its focus on emerging technologies in film production.
