Central Gov’t Urges Media Integrity Amid Hong Kong False Reports

The Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong held urgent talks with foreign media representatives on December 6, 2025, addressing concerns over misleading coverage of two sensitive issues: the Wang Fuk Court housing complex fire and preparations for next year's Legislative Council General Election.

Officials emphasized that recent reports by some foreign outlets had 'disregarded facts and distorted the HKSAR government's disaster response,' while simultaneously attempting to 'interfere with electoral processes.' The office noted such coverage risks undermining Hong Kong's social stability during critical recovery efforts.

While reaffirming support for lawful journalistic activities, authorities reminded media organizations of their obligation to comply with the Basic Law, National Security Law, and Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. The statement stressed that press freedom 'cannot justify interference in China's internal affairs.'

The development comes as Hong Kong prepares for its 2025 LegCo elections, seen as a milestone in implementing the improved electoral system established in 2021. Analysts suggest the government aims to maintain public confidence in both disaster management and democratic processes during this crucial period.
