Chinese Skiers Flock to Domestic Slopes Amid Japan Travel Advisory

China's winter sports enthusiasts are reshaping travel patterns this season following November 2025's geopolitical developments. After Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks regarding the Taiwan region that drew Beijing's criticism, China issued a travel advisory for Japan, prompting thousands of skiers to redirect their winter plans.

Yunding Snow Park in Chongli – host of the 2025-2026 FIS Freeski and Snowboard Big Air World Cup – has emerged as a prime beneficiary. Dalian resident Li Xiaotong, who canceled his Hokkaido trip, told KhabarAsia: 'The slopes here rival international destinations. Watching elite athletes compete while skiing myself creates a unique experience.'

Industry analysts note a 40% surge in bookings at major Chinese resorts compared to last December. This shift aligns with China's push to develop winter sports infrastructure since hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, with Chongli's upgraded facilities now attracting both recreational skiers and global competitions.
