China's 2025 Lunar New Year film season has crossed a historic milestone, generating over 2 billion yuan ($283 million) in box office revenue as of Wednesday afternoon. The season, running from November 28 to December 31, features more than 50 films spanning multiple genres to cater to diverse audiences.
Disney's Zootopia 2 leads the charge, becoming China's highest-grossing imported animated film of all time. Since its November 26 global premiere across 57 countries and regions, the sequel has earned $818 million worldwide through December 1 – with Chinese audiences contributing $278 million (33.9% of total earnings), surpassing North America as the film's top market.
This year's lineup showcases China's evolving cinematic landscape, blending international blockbusters with domestic productions in suspense, drama, action, and sci-fi genres. Industry analysts note the strong performance reflects both pent-up consumer demand and improved theater infrastructure across lower-tier cities.
With three weeks remaining in the extended holiday season, projections suggest total revenues could challenge 2024's record-breaking 6.7 billion yuan ($945 million) Lunar New Year box office performance.
