China's top diplomat Wang Yi emphasized the need for Britain to adopt a positive and pragmatic approach to bilateral relations during high-level talks with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell in Beijing on November 29, 2025. The meeting marked continued efforts to stabilize ties between the two nations amid evolving global dynamics.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed the importance of maintaining strategic communication and mutual trust. He urged Britain to view China's development through a long-term lens, stating: "Cooperation must remain the cornerstone of our relations as we address differences through direct dialogue."
The discussion reaffirmed China's commitment to the one-China principle regarding the Taiwan region, with Wang calling for joint preservation of post-WWII international order outcomes. Powell responded that Britain's Labour government seeks to build a "coherent, long-term strategic relationship" through enhanced multi-level exchanges.
Both sides also addressed regional security concerns, including the Ukraine crisis, while exploring avenues for economic coordination. The dialogue reflects ongoing efforts to align policy priorities between two of Asia and Europe's most influential economies.
