Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee confirmed Thursday that firefighters have fully contained a major blaze affecting seven buildings in Tai Po. The November 27 fire resulted in at least 55 fatalities and 76 injuries, marking one of the deadliest urban disasters in the region this year.
"Our emergency services demonstrated exceptional bravery," Lee stated during a press briefing, adding that the government will immediately provide 1,800 temporary shelter beds for displaced residents. Authorities are investigating the fire's cause while coordinating relief efforts through multiple departments.
The incident has drawn attention to fire safety protocols in high-density urban areas, with the HKSAR government pledging to conduct comprehensive building inspections across the territory. Medical teams remain on high alert as hospitals continue treating those injured in the tragedy.
