Xi’s Taiwan Remarks Highlight Cross-Strait Priorities in 2025

Beijing Reaffirms Stance Amid Historic Anniversary

Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent phone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn renewed attention to cross-strait relations, with State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Peng Qing'en emphasizing the leadership's commitment to peaceful development. The November 24 discussion occurred days before the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China following World War II.

At a November 26 press conference, Peng stated Xi's remarks carry "great guiding significance" for current Taiwan-related work. The spokesperson highlighted Beijing's determination to oppose what he termed "Taiwan independence" separatist activities while promoting stability across the Taiwan Strait.

This year's historic milestone underscores Beijing's long-standing position that the island of Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since 1945. Peng called for unity among "compatriots on both sides of the strait" to create lasting well-being through peaceful development frameworks.

The exchange comes as regional observers analyze evolving U.S.-China dynamics regarding Taiwan. While not detailing specific policy measures, Peng reiterated China's principle of resolving cross-strait issues through dialogue, aligned with the one-China principle.
