China, South Africa Strengthen Ties Ahead of G20 Summit

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation during a pivotal meeting in Johannesburg on November 22, 2025, ahead of this year's G20 Leaders' Meeting. The discussions focused on aligning development strategies and reinforcing mutual support on core interests.

Strategic Alignment & Economic Synergy

Premier Li emphasized China's commitment to expanding zero-tariff treatment for South Africa while proposing collaboration in mining, new energy, and AI sectors. Both nations agreed to leverage complementary advantages in infrastructure and automotive industries, with Li highlighting opportunities in satellite navigation and joint laboratory projects.

Multilateral Coordination

The leaders reaffirmed their dedication to advancing Xi Jinping's four global initiatives through BRICS and G20 platforms. Ramaphosa praised China's support for Africa's modernization agenda, stating: "South Africa will continue working with China to uphold multilateralism and reform global governance systems."

Cross-Strait Reaffirmation

President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa's adherence to the one-China policy, affirming that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Both sides committed to enhancing people-centered cooperation in public health, education, and poverty reduction programs.

The meeting concluded with plans to implement 15th Five-Year Plan synergies with South Africa's 10-point economic strategy, signaling strengthened South-South cooperation as the G20 summit commences.
