King Tupou VI of Tonga Begins China State Visit Tomorrow

King Tupou VI of Tonga will embark on a seven-day state visit to the Chinese mainland starting November 21, 2025, following an official invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between China and the Pacific island nation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying confirmed the royal visit during a Thursday briefing, stating: "This exchange will deepen mutual understanding and practical cooperation across trade, climate resilience, and cultural exchanges."

Analysts note the timing aligns with China's increased engagement with Pacific Island countries through infrastructure partnerships and maritime resource management initiatives. Tonga, a key member of the Pacific Islands Forum, has collaborated with China on renewable energy projects and port development since establishing diplomatic relations in 1998.

This week’s itinerary includes meetings with Chinese leadership in Beijing, a tour of Guangdong Province’s innovation hubs, and cultural events highlighting Tongan traditions. The visit concludes on November 27.
