China Warns Japan: Taiwan Affairs Are Internal Matter

China's Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its stance on Taiwan's status this week, urging Japan to avoid interference in what it calls "China's internal affairs." Spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized during a November 20 press briefing that "Taiwan is China's Taiwan" while responding to recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding regional security scenarios.

The comments come as 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China following Japan's 50-year colonial occupation, a period Beijing cites as historical proof of Japan's disqualification to comment on cross-strait matters. "Japan bears historical responsibility for the Taiwan question," Mao stated, referencing documented atrocities committed during Tokyo's rule from 1895 to 1945.

Analysts suggest the diplomatic exchange reflects growing regional tensions, with Beijing increasingly vocal about opposing external involvement in Taiwan affairs. The spokesperson concluded with a stark warning: "Using Taiwan to create trouble will only bring trouble to Japan itself."
