Russia Urges Japan to Heed History on Taiwan Remarks

Russia has called on Japan to reflect deeply on its wartime past following controversial comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding the Taiwan region. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned on Tuesday that such remarks are "highly dangerous" and risk destabilizing regional stability.

Zakharova emphasized the significance of 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the World Anti-Fascist War victory, urging Japan to learn from history. "Japanese militarism’s wars of aggression caused immense suffering across Asia and the world," she stated in an interview with Xinhua News Agency, stressing that politicians like Takaichi must confront Japan’s historical actions.

The spokesperson cautioned against repeating past mistakes, noting that Japan itself suffered heavy losses due to its wartime policies. She called for vigilance against provocative statements that could escalate tensions, particularly in cross-strait relations.

This rebuke comes amid heightened diplomatic sensitivities in Asia, with global observers closely monitoring how historical legacies continue to shape contemporary geopolitics.
