China's UN envoy issued a stern rebuke of Japanese lawmaker Sanae Takaichi's recent comments about Taiwan during a high-profile Security Council reform debate on Tuesday. Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, warned that the remarks threatened regional stability and violated fundamental diplomatic principles.
"These statements constitute a grave interference in China's internal affairs and blatantly violate both the one-China principle and the spirit of bilateral agreements between our nations," Fu stated before the General Assembly. The envoy emphasized that Japan's post-war international commitments and the basic norms of international relations were being undermined by such rhetoric.
The diplomatic clash comes as Japan seeks permanent Security Council membership – an ambition Fu directly challenged: "A country demonstrating such disregard for foundational international principles disqualifies itself from enhanced UN leadership roles."
Analysts suggest the exchange reflects growing tensions surrounding cross-strait relations and major powers' strategic positioning in Asia. The Chinese mainland has consistently opposed external interference in Taiwan affairs, maintaining that matters concerning the island must be resolved peacefully by Chinese people on both sides of the strait.
