China Demands Japan Retract Remarks in Beijing Talks

Chinese and Japanese diplomats held high-level consultations in Beijing this week amid escalating tensions over contentious statements regarding cross-strait relations. Liu Jinsong, Director General of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Department of Asian Affairs, met with Kanai Masaaki, Japan's Director-General for Asian and Oceanian Affairs, on Tuesday to address recent diplomatic friction.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed China issued a formal protest over remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which Beijing claims violated the one-China principle and the spirit of bilateral agreements. "We urged Japan to immediately withdraw its wrongful remarks and cease provocations on issues concerning China's core interests," Mao stated during a regular press briefing.

The consultation comes as regional observers note increased diplomatic activity across Asia this November, with multiple countries navigating complex relationships amid shifting economic and security dynamics. Analysts suggest the meeting underscores China's determination to safeguard what it considers fundamental principles of international engagement, particularly regarding matters involving the Taiwan region.
