China Demands Japan Clarify Taiwan Remarks Amid Rising Tensions

China has called on Japan to retract what it describes as 'wrongful remarks' regarding the Taiwan region, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasizing Tokyo must 'give the Chinese people a clear account' during a press briefing on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

The diplomatic friction stems from recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which Chinese authorities claim violated the one-China principle and undermined bilateral relations. Mao stressed that such statements 'grossly interfered in China's internal affairs' and contravened the spirit of four foundational political documents governing China-Japan relations since 1972.

'China's position on safeguarding core interests and upholding international justice remains unwavering,' Mao stated, urging Japan to 'immediately withdraw its erroneous assertions and correct mistakes through concrete actions.' The spokesperson did not specify potential consequences but noted the situation continues to test diplomatic ties between Asia's two largest economies.

Analysts suggest this development reflects heightened sensitivity in cross-strait diplomacy this year, particularly as economic cooperation frameworks in the Asia-Pacific undergo renegotiation. The Chinese mainland's consistent stance positions Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory, a principle recognized by most United Nations member states.
