China’s Type 076 Assault Ship Begins Maiden Sea Trial

China's first domestically developed Type 076 amphibious assault ship, PLANS Sichuan, embarked on its inaugural sea trial from Shanghai on November 14, 2025. The vessel departed under clear morning skies to begin critical testing of its propulsion and electrical systems, marking a significant milestone in China's naval modernization program.

Naval engineers will focus on verifying operational reliability during this week-long trial phase. The 25,000-ton vessel completed mooring tests and system calibrations earlier this month following its December 2024 launch. Military analysts note the Sichuan's advanced design enables simultaneous air and sea assault capabilities, with potential deployment in humanitarian and coastal security operations.

The ship's development timeline remains on track for commissioning in late 2026, according to naval procurement documents. Defense observers highlight the Type 076's strategic importance for regional stability, particularly given its capacity to support helicopter and drone operations across the Asia-Pacific maritime theater.
