The 15th National Games, hosted jointly by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao for the first time, is making strides in advancing regional integration within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The equestrian competition, which began on November 10 at the Shenzhen Guangming International Equestrian Centre, highlights cross-border collaboration and institutional alignment under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle.
Regional Synergy in Action
Hong Kong Jockey Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, who presented awards at the event, emphasized the Games' role in breaking down regulatory barriers. "Hosting a cross-border sporting event requires coordination on visas, logistics, and regulations," he said. "Solving those issues brings the Bay Area closer together." The club has contributed HK$450 million to Hong Kong and 50 million yuan to Guangdong to support the Games, alongside technical assistance in venue operations and anti-doping measures.
Modeling Cross-Border Success
Engelbrecht-Bresges cited the Conghua Racecourse in Guangzhou—a Hong Kong Jockey Club initiative—as a blueprint for regional cooperation. The facility has created jobs for 1,000 local residents and will host an international race in 2026, broadcast globally. "It shows Hong Kong is fully part of one nation," he added, underscoring the event's alignment with national development goals.
Empowering Youth and Communities
Beyond infrastructure, the CEO stressed nurturing a "can-do" spirit among youth through sports. "Sports teach discipline, resilience, and the mindset of permanent improvement," he noted. The club’s efforts aim to strengthen community health and shared identity across the GBA, reinforcing sport as a catalyst for sustainable progress.
