China Urges U.S. to Ensure Fair Competition in Global Shipbuilding Markets

China has called on the United States to maintain fair competition in international shipping and shipbuilding markets, following a mutual one-year suspension of trade measures between the two nations. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce emphasized the importance of collaboration to stabilize economic ties during a Monday statement.

The development comes after the U.S. paused Section 301 investigation measures targeting China's maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. In response, China simultaneously suspended its countermeasures implemented last month. Both actions align with agreements made during recent economic talks in Kuala Lumpur, according to ministry officials.

"These reciprocal steps demonstrate our shared commitment to resolving differences through dialogue," a ministry spokesperson stated, highlighting the need for "mutual respect and equal-footed consultation" in ongoing negotiations. The temporary truce aims to inject stability into global trade networks that connect Asian manufacturing hubs with international markets.

Analysts suggest the détente could benefit multinational corporations relying on maritime supply chains, while researchers note its potential to influence broader Asia-Pacific trade dynamics. The announcement follows heightened scrutiny of shipbuilding capacities amid growing competition in green energy transition technologies.
