Mainland Expands Travel Ease for Taiwan Residents, Streamlines Entry Process

The Chinese mainland announced new measures on Wednesday to simplify travel procedures for residents of Taiwan, expanding entry points and introducing flexible permit options to foster cross-strait exchanges. State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhang Han revealed that 100 mainland ports will now issue single-entry travel permits upon arrival – up from previous numbers – with processing completed within 30 minutes.

Residents of Taiwan can obtain these permits when arriving by air or sea, valid for stays up to three months. A new five-year card-type travel permit will also be available through mainland immigration offices or Taiwan-based travel agencies. First-time visitors receive free permits and complimentary access to over 1,000 scenic areas nationwide.

Zhang emphasized data security protections under mainland laws while addressing concerns raised by Taiwan's mainland affairs council: 'Our Taiwan compatriots can visit safely and comfortably when following regulations. Some political forces on the island are fabricating risks to hinder normal exchanges.'

The policy update comes as cross-strait travel gradually recovers post-pandemic, with analysts noting potential economic benefits for tourism and service sectors across the Taiwan Strait. Business groups have welcomed the streamlined process, which reduces administrative hurdles for short-term professional visits.
