China Advances In-Orbit Manufacturing with Inflatable Space Module Tests

Chinese scientists have achieved a milestone in space industrialization with the successful ground testing of an inflatable, reconfigurable space manufacturing module, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced this week. The innovation marks a critical step toward establishing large-scale production capabilities in orbit — a frontier that could reshape global tech supply chains.

The module, designed to launch in a compact folded state before inflating to form a stable workspace in space, addresses key challenges of cost and payload limitations. Researchers emphasize its potential to enable high-precision manufacturing of semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials in microgravity environments, free from Earth’s atmospheric interference.

“This reconfigurable design significantly reduces launch costs while maximizing usable volume,” a CAS representative stated.
