China's space program enters a transformative phase with the 2026 debut of its next-generation Mengzhou-1 crewed spacecraft and Long March-10A rocket, announced by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). The four-mission campaign aims to advance crewed spaceflight capabilities and extend orbital research operations.
Mission Breakdown
The 2026 agenda features two Shenzhou crew launches (Shenzhou-22 and Shenzhou-23) from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, each carrying three astronauts. A landmark experiment will see one Shenzhou-22 crew member attempt a year-long continuous space stay – a critical test for future deep-space exploration. Crews will conduct spacewalks, cargo transfers, and public engagement activities while maintaining the China Space Station.
Next-Gen Hardware
Wenchang Space Launch Site will host the Tianzhou-10 cargo mission and historic Mengzhou-1 launch. The modular Mengzhou spacecraft represents a quantum leap over Shenzhou-class vehicles, featuring upgraded re-entry systems and expanded payload capacity. Its maiden flight will test life support systems and carry experimental equipment for extended missions.
Public Engagement
Continuing a tradition dating to 2003's Shenzhou-5 mission, CMSA opened design submissions for all four mission insignias. This initiative strengthens public connection to China's space ambitions while showcasing artistic interpretations of technological progress.
