As China celebrated the Double Ninth Festival on October 29 – a day dedicated to respecting elders – attention turned to the nation's ambitious programs addressing its rapidly aging population. With over 310 million residents aged 60+ accounting for 22% of the population, China is implementing what officials call "a Chinese-style elderly care system" combining cultural values with modern solutions.
Leadership Drives Reform
President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized elderly welfare during inspections of care facilities nationwide. In 2018, while visiting a Shanghai community center, Xi stated: "It is our common wish that elderly people lead a happy, healthy and long life." This vision has translated into policy – since 2012, China has established 406,000 senior care facilities offering nearly 8 million beds nationwide.
Silver Economy Gains Momentum
Minister of Civil Affairs Lu Zhiyuan recently revealed transformative numbers: 2.24 million homes modified for accessibility, 86,000 senior meal centers serving 3 million daily, and 500 model community care networks. The eldercare market, valued at 7 trillion yuan ($963 billion), is projected to quadruple by 2035.
Cultural Meets Practical
While maintaining traditional respect for elders, China is modernizing support systems through tech-integrated care and public-private partnerships. As Lu noted: "A number of practical initiatives have been successfully implemented," signaling a new era where cultural heritage meets 21st-century demographic challenges.
