Reviving Heritage: Taiwan’s Peony Ancient Ballads Find New Voice

In the lush landscapes of Pingtung, a cultural renaissance is unfolding through the haunting melodies of the Peony Ancient Ballads – a musical tradition rooted in four historic ballad systems, including Xinbaojiang and Shimen. Once teetering on the brink of extinction, these ballads now resonate anew thanks to pioneering preservation efforts.

The Xinbaojiang Ancient Ballad Class, established by the late cultural advocate Bai Yongwu, has become a blueprint for heritage revival. By systematically transcribing oral traditions into musical notation and reimagining arrangements, the group transformed fading folk tunes into dynamic performances. Members of the class have not only preserved these ballads but reinterpreted them for modern audiences, showcasing the artistic richness of the Taiwan region.

This revival movement highlights how communities are leveraging cultural heritage to strengthen local identity. Through workshops and performances, residents of Taiwan are rediscovering poetic lyrics and intricate rhythms that reflect centuries of storytelling. The project serves as a case study for preserving intangible cultural assets across Asia.
