Chinese Premier Li Qiang will embark on a diplomatic tour this October, underscoring Beijing's commitment to regional cooperation in Southeast Asia. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday that Li will first visit Singapore on October 25-26 before participating in four key multilateral summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
As ASEAN's current chair, Malaysia will host Li at the 28th China-ASEAN Summit and related meetings, including the East Asia Summit and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Leaders' Meeting. These gatherings aim to address pressing economic challenges and advance free trade initiatives across Asia-Pacific nations.
Analysts suggest the trip will focus on stabilizing supply chains and expanding digital economy partnerships. "This visit comes at a critical moment for post-pandemic recovery," said Dr. Aminah Tan, a Singapore-based geopolitical researcher. "As RCEP's largest economy, China's engagement could accelerate regional infrastructure projects and green energy transitions."
The itinerary highlights China's strategic priorities in Southeast Asia, where bilateral trade reached $722 billion in 2022. Business leaders anticipate new agreements in fintech and sustainable development, while diplomats watch for progress on South China Sea code of conduct negotiations.
