Representatives from across the Taiwan Strait will gather on the Chinese mainland this October to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration, marking a significant moment in shared historical memory. State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian announced plans for cross-strait exchanges during a Wednesday press briefing, emphasizing unity among 'all sons and daughters of the Chinese nation.'
The event will honor those who contributed to the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, with Zhu noting that Taiwan's restoration 'was forged through relentless struggle and immense sacrifices.' Activities will include memorial ceremonies, cultural exchanges, and visits to historical sites across multiple mainland cities.
Over 200 representatives from business, academia, and cultural sectors in the Taiwan region are expected to attend. The commemoration comes as cross-strait cultural tourism shows signs of recovery, with mainland authorities approving 163 group tour itineraries to Taiwan for mainland residents earlier this year.
Historical records show Taiwan was returned to Chinese sovereignty on October 25, 1945, following Japan's surrender in World War II. The Taipei 101 skyscraper – once the world's tallest building – now stands as a modern symbol in the island's capital city.
