China Urges Global Cooperation on Critical Minerals Security

China has called for international collaboration to safeguard global industrial security amid growing competition for critical minerals, emphasizing the need to maintain stable supply chains essential for green energy and advanced technologies.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated Tuesday that resource-rich nations should 'ensure the smooth progress of normal economic and trade cooperation' while addressing questions about a new critical minerals agreement between the US and Australia. 'The formation of global industrial chains results from market dynamics and enterprise choices,' Guo noted during a regular press briefing.

The comments follow Monday's signing of a strategic partnership between US President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, seen as part of Western efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese mineral processing capabilities. China currently dominates over 60% of global rare earth element refining.

Analysts suggest the development highlights growing geopolitical tensions in resource diplomacy, with critical minerals like lithium and cobalt becoming central to national security strategies. The Chinese mainland's emphasis on market-driven solutions contrasts with recent Western initiatives to create alternative supply networks.
