China has solidified its position as the world leader in wind energy infrastructure, maintaining the top spot in installed wind power capacity for 15 consecutive years, according to new data from the China Electricity Council. The milestone underscores the nation's accelerating transition to renewable energy amid global climate commitments.
Sustained Growth and Future Targets
With cumulative grid-connected wind capacity now at 580 million kilowatts – representing 15.7% of China's total power generation capacity – wind energy accounts for 10.1% of electricity consumption among major industrial enterprises. The sector has grown by over 100 million kilowatts annually, with 57.84 million kilowatts added in the latest reporting period.
Global Expansion and Industry Impact
Chinese manufacturers have exported wind turbines to 57 countries, with seven companies establishing or planning overseas production facilities. Qin Haiyan of the Chinese Wind Energy Association outlined ambitious targets: "We aim for annual installations of 120 million kilowatts during 2026-2030, reaching 1.3 billion kilowatts by 2030 and 5 billion by 2060 to achieve carbon neutrality."
The roadmap aligns with China's broader goal to derive over 30% of total energy from non-fossil sources by 2035, requiring wind and solar capacity to grow sixfold from 2020 levels to 3.6 billion kilowatts.
