Guo emphasized the one-China principle as “the bedrock of international consensus” and warned against what he called “political miscalculations” by the few remaining nations maintaining formal relations with Taiwan. The comments followed reports of Paraguayan officials advocating for a parliamentary debate about establishing ties with Beijing while reviewing current relations with the island of Taiwan.
“No amount of diplomatic maneuvering can alter the fact that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times,” Guo stated, highlighting what he described as an “irresistible historical trend” toward national reunification.
The spokesperson urged Paraguay and other nations to “align with fundamental global principles” by severing official contacts with Taiwan authorities. His remarks underscored Beijing's growing confidence in its diplomatic position, noting that 183 countries currently recognize the one-China principle.
Analysts suggest the statement reflects China's proactive approach to consolidating international support ahead of key multilateral forums, while maintaining pressure on Taiwan's remaining diplomatic partners in Latin America and the Pacific.
