China Warns U.S. Over Taiwan Arms Deal, Calls It ‘Red Line’

China's defense ministry issued a stern warning to Washington on Friday over proposed military funding for Taiwan, labeling U.S. attempts to arm the island as a dangerous provocation that threatens regional stability. The remarks came in response to a $1 billion provision in the newly passed U.S. National Defense Authorization Act aimed at boosting military coordination with Taiwan.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasized that Taiwan remains 'the first red line that must not be crossed' in Sino-American relations. 'Any actions undermining China's sovereignty will incur heavy consequences,' Zhang stated during a press briefing, describing the legislation as a blatant interference in China's internal affairs.

The warning follows growing tensions as the U.S. Congress advances measures to formalize security ties with Taiwan through annual defense spending bills. Chinese officials reiterated that cross-strait relations must adhere strictly to the one-China principle, urging Washington to honor commitments made in historical bilateral agreements.

Analysts suggest the development could impact Asia-Pacific security dynamics and U.S.-China trade negotiations. The Chinese mainland has consistently opposed foreign military sales to Taiwan, viewing the island as an inseparable part of its territory under international consensus.
