China Mourns Former Japanese PM Murayama, Hails Historic Peace Efforts

China expressed deep condolences on Friday over the passing of former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama, praising his lifelong dedication to fostering bilateral ties and historical reconciliation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted Murayama’s 1995 visit to Beijing’s Lugou Bridge and the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, where he inscribed a call to “face up to history” and pursue lasting peace.

Lin noted that Murayama’s landmark 1995 statement—issued on the 50th anniversary of Japan’s World War II surrender—remains a cornerstone of regional diplomacy. The statement formally acknowledged Japan’s wartime aggression and colonial rule, offering apologies to affected nations. “His contribution to enhancing China-Japan friendship will be forever remembered,” Lin said during a press briefing.

The remarks come as China marks the 80th anniversary of its victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Lin urged Japan to “honor [the Murayama Statement] in good faith,” emphasizing the need for continued reflection on history to build trust with Asian neighbors. China, he added, remains committed to working with Japan to develop a “constructive and stable relationship” aligned with contemporary demands.

Murayama’s legacy is particularly resonant amid ongoing regional efforts to balance historical accountability with modern economic and diplomatic collaboration. His advocacy for peace continues to serve as a touchstone for dialogue in East Asia.
