In Santiago, Chile, a dynamic gathering of young innovators from China and Latin America has sparked fresh ideas to tackle poverty through sustainable development. The 2025 China–Latin America Youth Challenge to Alleviate Poverty, held in late August, brought together over 310 students and faculty from 27 universities and enterprises across China, Chile, Brazil, and Peru, showcasing the power of cross-border collaboration.
Six finalist teams presented groundbreaking solutions, ranging from transforming mining waste into eco-friendly construction materials to modular housing for disaster recovery. The winning project, developed by a joint team from Tsinghua University and the University of Chile, introduced a solar-powered water purification system designed to improve access to clean water in remote communities.
"Youth are not just future leaders—they are problem-solvers today," said one event organizer, emphasizing the role of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex challenges. The initiative aligns with broader efforts under APEC to engage young voices in global governance, as highlighted by CGTN's 'Act to Action' campaign.
