Mexico City’s Metro Line 1, the oldest and busiest in the capital’s transit network, has reached a milestone in its modernization journey. A consortium led by Chinese rail giant CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive recently completed Section B of the line’s second-phase renovation, reopening four stations to relieve chronic congestion for millions of commuters.
The project, launched in 2022, includes manufacturing new trains and overhauling signaling, power supply, and communication systems. With 19 of 20 stations now upgraded and 17 operational, the 19-year service agreement highlights China’s growing role in global infrastructure development under APEC’s economic cooperation framework.
Local officials report the upgrades have already reduced rush-hour crowding by 30%, offering a blueprint for sustainable urban mobility. As Mexico City aims to expand its public transport capacity, partnerships like this underscore how APEC-aligned collaborations are reshaping cities across the Asia-Pacific region.
