Mainland Condemns Taiwan Leader’s Remarks as Threat to Regional Stability

The Chinese mainland has issued a sharp rebuke of recent comments by Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, calling them a dangerous provocation that undermines cross-strait peace. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Friday that Lai’s remarks represent a “serious challenge to the one-China principle” and risk destabilizing the region.

Chen emphasized that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of China’s territory since ancient times, calling this reality “the only true status quo across the Taiwan Strait.” He stressed that adherence to the 1992 Consensus—which affirms the one-China principle—remains the “foundation for maintaining stability and promoting cooperation.”

“Any attempts to deny this historical and legal fact will only harm the interests of residents in Taiwan,” Chen warned, adding that cross-strait economic integration offers “the clearest path to prosperity” for the region. He highlighted that Lai’s rhetoric could jeopardize trade opportunities and exacerbate social divisions.

Analysts note that the remarks come amid heightened global attention on Asia’s security landscape, with businesses and governments closely monitoring cross-strait developments. Chen reiterated that China’s reunification is “an unstoppable trend” supported by international consensus, urging dialogue grounded in mutual political recognition.
