China Imposes Special Port Fees on US Ships in Trade Dispute

China will begin charging special port fees on U.S.-linked vessels starting October 14, escalating trade tensions between the two economic giants. The move, announced by China's Ministry of Transport on Friday, directly responds to recent U.S. tariffs imposed on Chinese ships following a Section 301 investigation.

The fees apply to ships owned or operated by U.S. entities, those with at least 25% U.S. ownership, and all U.S.-flagged or U.S.-built vessels. A phased fee structure will start at 400 yuan ($56.3) per net tonne, increasing annually through 2027. The ministry called the measure a 'justified' response to protect Chinese maritime interests, accusing the U.S. of violating trade principles and disrupting bilateral maritime commerce.

Analysts suggest the decision could impact global supply chains, particularly for businesses relying on transpacific shipping routes. The development comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize China-U.S. relations following recent high-level dialogues on trade and technology.
