China has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing international human rights through multilateral cooperation, following the adoption of a landmark resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council. The resolution, spearheaded by China and backed by nearly 70 countries, emphasizes addressing inequalities by strengthening economic, social, and cultural rights worldwide.
A Multilateral Approach to Rights
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced Thursday that the resolution, titled "Promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities," was adopted by consensus during the council's 60th session. The initiative calls for enhanced international cooperation and technical assistance to support developing nations, leveraging a knowledge hub established under China’s proposal.
Global Support for the Resolution
Guo noted widespread approval from developing countries, with representatives stating the resolution aligns with global needs and amplifies calls for greater investment in socioeconomic rights. Bolivia, Egypt, Pakistan, and South Africa were among the co-sponsors. "This resolution is a testament to the power of collective action," Guo said, highlighting China’s intent to uphold "true multilateralism" through dialogue and mutual respect.
The move underscores China’s growing role in shaping global human rights discourse, particularly in bridging development gaps. Analysts suggest the resolution could bolster efforts to address systemic inequalities while fostering South-South collaboration.
