5.4 Quake Shakes Southwest China’s Sichuan, No Casualties Reported

A magnitude-5.4 earthquake struck Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with local authorities swiftly initiating emergency response protocols.

Residents reported moderate shaking in mountainous areas, but no immediate casualties or major structural damage have been confirmed. The region, known for its seismic activity due to its position near the Longmenshan Fault Line, has implemented robust earthquake preparedness measures following previous disasters.

"Our teams are conducting thorough damage assessments and assisting communities in vulnerable areas," stated a spokesperson from the Sichuan Provincial Emergency Management Department. Transportation and communication networks remain operational across most affected zones.

Ganzi's earthquake-resistant infrastructure, upgraded after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, appears to have mitigated potential harm. The incident highlights ongoing geological challenges in Asia's tectonically active regions while showcasing China's disaster response capabilities.
