China Leads Global Energy Shift as Renewables Surpass Coal

Historic Milestone in Clean Energy Transition

Global renewable electricity generation outpaced coal for the first time in history during the first half of 2025, driven overwhelmingly by China's accelerated clean energy deployment, according to a landmark report by energy think tank Ember.

China's Unmatched Renewable Expansion

China accounted for 55% of worldwide solar generation growth and 82% of wind energy expansion during this period, installing more renewable capacity than all other countries combined. This unprecedented scale enabled the country to meet 100% of its new electricity demand through clean sources while reducing fossil fuel power generation by 2%.

Global Emissions Impact

The shift triggered a 46-tonne reduction in China's power sector emissions, offsetting increases in the U.S. and EU. Analysts highlight this as critical to stabilizing global CO2 levels during the crucial energy transition period.

Long-Term Strategic Vision

China's wind and solar capacity officially surpassed its coal infrastructure in early 2025, creating market conditions for sustained fossil fuel reduction. The achievement reflects strategic investments in grid modernization and renewable technology innovation over the past decade.
