China, Bangladesh Mark 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties with Leadership Praise

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin exchanged warm congratulations on Saturday to commemorate five decades of diplomatic relations, underscoring a partnership that has evolved into a cornerstone of regional cooperation in South Asia.

In his message, Xi highlighted China's commitment to 'enhance strategic coordination' with Bangladesh, emphasizing mutual support on core interests. The Chinese leader praised Dhaka's adherence to the One-China principle while reaffirming Beijing's support for Bangladesh's 'independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.'

Shahabuddin described China as a 'trusted development partner,' noting bilateral trade growth exceeding $25 billion in 2023. The leaders specifically cited successful collaborations in infrastructure, including the recently completed Padma Bridge Rail Link and multiple coal-fired power plants built under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.

Analysts point to Bangladesh's strategic importance in China's South Asia outreach, particularly through the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. The relationship has weathered global economic shifts, with Chinese investments in Bangladesh growing 17% year-on-year since 2020.

Cultural ties also featured prominently, with both leaders celebrating educational exchanges that have seen over 6,000 Bangladeshi students enroll in Chinese universities. The anniversary coincides with preparations for the China-South Asia Expo, where Bangladeshi textiles and pharmaceuticals will occupy a dedicated pavilion.

As Beijing and Dhaka pledge to deepen cooperation in digital economy and climate resilience, this milestone signals stronger alignment on regional security and development priorities.
