China Urges Mexico to Safeguard Chinese Firms Amid Trade Tensions

China has called on Mexico to adhere to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules in its anti-dumping investigations and ensure fair treatment for Chinese companies, the Ministry of Commerce announced Friday. The statement follows Mexico's launch of 11 trade probes targeting Chinese products this year – including float glass and PVC tarpaulins – nearly double 2022's total.

A ministry spokesperson emphasized China's opposition to protectionist measures that undermine its businesses, stating authorities will closely monitor developments. While Mexico escalates trade actions, China has maintained restraint in initiating its own trade-remedy investigations, according to official data.

The remarks come amid global trade uncertainties fueled by what Beijing describes as 'excessive U.S. tariff use.' China advocates multilateral cooperation to counter unilateralism and warns against 'external coercion' influencing trade policies. In response to Mexico's proposed tariff hikes, China has initiated an investigation into potential trade barriers under domestic laws.

'China will take all necessary measures to protect our companies' legitimate rights,' the spokesperson said, signaling potential countermeasures. The development highlights growing trade complexities as nations balance domestic industries with international commitments.

Business analysts note the outcome could impact supply chains across construction materials and industrial goods sectors. With China being Mexico's second-largest trading partner, the dialogue carries weight for both Asian and North American markets.
